What to Expect from a Licensed Mobile Patrol Service

What to Expect from a Licensed Mobile Patrol Service

Whether you’re actively looking for mobile security patrols, want to understand more about what to look for when hiring mobile security patrols or whether you just want to know what to expect from a licensed mobile patrol service, this article should help to answer most of the questions you have about finding the right security firm to work with and what to expect from them.

There are various types of mobile patrol service such as lock up, unlock, external, perimeter patrols, internal patrols and health and safety checks which can also be used in coordination with other security provisions such as CCTV security, keyholding and alarm response. Ensuring you work with a supplier that can tailor the security package based on the requirements of the organisation is important.

When you work with a licensed mobile patrol service you should be safe in the knowledge that they comply with regulations, are approved and all your security requirements are taken care of. Your security supplier should:

  1. Be verified and carry a SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence. The SIA (Security Industry Authority) is a department of the UK Home Office. The role of the SIA is to ensure that the legal requirements of all employees working in the security industry are appropriately adhered to, making sure that everyone is correctly licenced for their job role, as it is a criminal offence to work in the industry without being correctly licenced.
  2. Participate in the ACS (Approved Contractor Scheme) run by the SIA, which is a voluntary scheme for security companies to join to prove they meet and exceed quality standards and are audited twice a year as a minimum. 20% of the security industry are currently registered on the ACS scheme. There are approximately 4000 companies in the security industry of which 800 are members of the ACS.
  3. Provide a bespoke security package based on the requirements of the organisation. Using a 3-step process to recognise the value of high-quality security service provision:
    1. Identify what security operations success looks like for your organisation.
    2. Define and identify the right team to work within the organisation. Set up and run the security provision as a live eco-system.
    3. Constantly review, update and report on the security provision and value-added operations provided.
  4. Be supported 24/7 by a control room who work with the security team and are able to check on the status of the security patrols but can also bring in additional support if an incident occurs or in an emergency situation.
  5. Have experienced full time staff who are matched to the customers’ requirements based on specific profiling to ensure the best fit. All security staff should be employed by the company and not self-employed or subcontracted. CRB checked, Right to Work checks, English language and personality tests should be carried out by the organisation before employing the security personnel. Security staff are often the first point of contact for visitors to the organisation, not only providing a visual deterrent but also a knowledge base and should represent the business in the correct way.
  6. Not only provide the core functions of the contract but also provide an added value service that focuses on creating a positive return on the investment in security through operations continuity, people protection and equipment loss minimisation, plus identifying ongoing operations efficiencies that extends beyond the typical mobile patrol.

Your mobile patrol service should be able to adapt to your organisation’s requirements. Not all businesses need 24/7 protection but working with a company that is able to scale up or scale down quickly and efficiently is important for seamless security provision. Security should be seen as an asset and an investment and choosing the right security company should be an organisation that has similar values, understands your business and knows that one size does not fit all.
