Security Fears Heightened as Thousands of Businesses Remain Closed

Thousands of businesses up and down the country remain closed and with no clear indication of when they might re-open criminals are taking advantage of vulnerable premises and finding new ways to conduct criminal activity.

Whilst the media are reporting a decrease in shoplifting, serious assaults, and car crime during the lockdown, what they’re failing to report to the same extent is a nationwide increase in theft from unattended business premises. In contrast to the media Police are reporting a significant increase in break-ins and theft from commercial properties that are closed and sitting empty and they are advising business owners to take necessary precautions to protect their premises and commercial assets.

• Test your alarm system and make sure that it’s monitored and fully operational.
• Review your CCTV monitoring system and ensure that it’s operational, records high quality images, and covers internal and external access points and any vulnerable areas.
• Identify vulnerable areas and ensure that security gates, security bollards and fire exits are all locked and secure.
• Move high value items into lockable storage rooms so that they are out of sight.
• Review your security lighting and ensure that there’s sufficient low-level dusk till dawn lighting that can be enhanced when detecting movement.
• If you haven’t already got them, install highly visible warning signs that show that your premises is protected and to act as a deterrent.
• Consider employing an SIA approved security company to either provide a manned guard at your premises for a permanent presence, or a mobile patrol unit that can regularly check your premises and act as a highly visible alternative.
