In this modern age of social media where word of mouth is both powerful and instantaneous, companies are continually striving to project a positive brand image through CSR initiatives. For some companies, it could be argued that this is merely placation, a reaction to what they think people want. For others, it’s part of the very fabric of their business and integral to their operation. Magenta is just such a business.
In fact, as recognition of our commitment to corporate social responsibility, the company won the Environmental Initiative of the Year in 2009 and 2012 at the Security Excellence Awards having been nominated in the same category in 2010 and 2011. In 2013, we were nominated for the ‘CSR Initiative of the Year’.
We realised that consumers are looking for more from businesses these days, they’re not just looking for a professional service, they’re looking for what businesses can do for the community at large – as part of a survey across clients, 85% of respondents cited CSR as an important issue. They also said they would be more likely to choose a CSR focused supplier over one who didn’t take such issues seriously – clearly, CSR is now one of the major factors in the consumer decision making process.
Over the next 2 blog posts, we will look at how Magenta is committing itself to CSR. First, let’s see a few of the ways how our ‘green initiatives’ are transforming the way we do business.
Green practices have become absolutely central to our business ethos – Magenta was the first manned guarding company to achieve ISO 14001 – an ‘environmental management certification that exists to help organizations (a) minimize how their operations (processes etc.) negatively affect the environment (i.e. cause adverse changes to air, water, or land); (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and (c) continually improve in the above.’
But how do we go about it? Here are just a few of the ways we have adapted to operate in a ‘greener’ fashion. In an ongoing effort to reduce energy consumption by 35% by the end of 2013, Magenta implemented a number of green initiatives with considerable success – we are now expecting to achieve a 75% reduction in energy use by the end of the same period. We invested more than £20,000 in environmentally friendly lighting which automatically shuts down in unused areas, whilst using less energy when in use achieving a 50% reduction in electricity.
