What Should Security Cost? A Plain-English Pricing Guide for SMEs

Security pricing is one of the opaquest areas of the UK service market. Quotes for similar-sounding services can vary by 30-40% between providers, with no obvious explanation. This guide explains what drives that variation, what reasonable pricing looks like and what the lowest quote is usually telling you.

Why pricing varies so much

Security costs are driven primarily by labour – specifically, the cost of employing, training, and managing guards. Providers that directly employ their guards, pay above the National Living Wage, invest in ongoing training and carry adequate insurance will cost more than providers that cut costs through agency staffing, minimal training, and lower insurance coverage. Both will quote you a figure. Only one is carrying the full cost of doing the job properly.

The other major variable is accreditation. Holding NSI Gold and top-tier SIA ACS status requires ongoing investment in audit processes, management systems and quality assurance. That cost is reflected in pricing. A provider with no meaningful accreditation does not carry that cost.

What typical security pricing looks like

For static guarding in the UK, pricing typically ranges from £18 to £28+ per hour depending on location, site complexity, hours required and provider quality. London and other major cities attract a premium. Overnight and weekend hours are usually priced higher. Long-term contracts often attract lower rates.

Mobile security patrol is usually structured as a monthly retainer, with pricing reflecting the number of sites, visit frequency and response time commitment. For a single-site SME, monthly mobile patrol costs often range from £150 to £400 depending on specification.

Keyholding and alarm response – where the security provider holds keys and responds to alarm activations on your behalf – is typically priced on a monthly retainer basis, often in the range of £50–£120 per month for a single site.

What the lowest quote is telling you

When a quote comes in significantly below others – 20% or more – it is worth asking what has been removed to achieve that price. The most common answers are: guards are agency staff rather than directly employed; insurance levels are lower than the industry standard; training is minimal beyond the SIA licence requirement; and the provider’s accreditation is either entry-level or non-existent.

None of these are immediately visible in a proposal. You won’t see “we use agency guards” in the sales pitch. But the cost structure tells the story. A properly employed, properly insured, properly accredited security team has a floor cost that can’t be undercut without compromising something.

The cost of getting it wrong

A single uninsured incident on your premises – a slip and fall, a break-in where the guard was not on post, an altercation that was handled poorly – can cost more than several years of security fees. The question for any SME is not how much you spend on security. It’s what you’re actually buying for that spend.
